On September 30th, members from various ELIXIR nodes, including BioData.pt, joined the Impact and Green online workshop. Promoted by the ELIXIR Staff Exchange SPARKLE, this workshop was organised by BioData.pt | ELIXIR Portugal in collaboration with ELIXIR Hub, and the Italian and Norwegian ELIXIR Nodes.
The workshop focused on strategies for reducing the environmental impact of research infrastructures, with a particular emphasis on green computing, and impact assessment at the node level.
Through engaging sessions, participants explored sustainable data management solutions to help reduce the carbon footprint of scientific computing and operations. The Portuguese ELIXIR node presented its impact assessment strategy and key performance indicators. A colleague from ELIXIR Finland also presented her master’s thesis on how to measure impact in an ELIXIR node, focusing on ELIXIR Finland.
Key Workshop Topics:
- Assessing the environmental impact of research activities
- Learning impact assessment methodologies in research infrastructures
- Greening research operations, including computing practices
- Understanding ELIXIR’s initiatives on environmental sustainability
